Here's the blog!

Hi all,

I am glad you made it this far. Please let me know if you have any questions. This is new to me so if you discover an aspect of this blog that would enhance our communication, please let me know!

Happy blogging,

  1. Margaret,
Well it appears that you can teach this old dog a new trick. Thank you for setting this up.

  2. I had some doubts myself, but I think I've got it! Thanks Margaret!

  3. I finally understand the blog! now, on to figuring out this paper....I havnt't had a moment to read the really long paper yet, but im thinking of ways to split it up... I'm in the midst of studying for 243, so I'll hopefully get some thoughts up by the end of the weekend...

    Enjoy the warm weather today!

  4. I am sorry it has taken me so long to post. I have been pretty busy.
I have been researching the activities of SIRT1. It is an amazing compound that does a variety of things including, but not limited to: 1.decreasing apoptosis, which increases cell longevity - potentially increasing longevity of life 2. increasing insulin sensitivity, which would be very beneficial for those with type 2 diabetes 3. enhancing fat oxidation, which would be an amazing tool for weight loss. Enhancing these activites would be amazing! I will continue to do research on sirt1 activity, as I do not want to miss any.

I feel confident that 4 pages (2 students) could be written about the activity of sirt1 alone. As for resveratrol, there is another group writing about this drug and frankly, it does the same as our drug SRT1720 except that our drug is 10,000 x better! I think it is important to note that it stemmed the research to enhance the activity of sirt1. I think it is possible to write the remaining 6 pages (3 students) from the research on SRT1720 by discussing each experiment in detail and discussing the implications with respect to the activity of sirt1 from the first 4 pages. I have a note out to my brother regarding the current human research. See you in class tomorrow!

***This article explains how SIRT1 deacetylates DNA repair factor Ku70, which in turn sequesters proapoptotic factor Bax away from Mitochondria. Therefore, CR, which induces SIRT1, promotes cell longevity.

****This article explains how SIRT1 represses genes in fat regulation increasing the mobilization of fat and general fat loss.

  5. Ladies,

I spoke with Maragret before class today about possibly setting a deadline for dividing up the tasks for this project. I would like to propose that we divide up the tasks at a meeting on Tuesday morning 9:15AM, same lounge. (Margaret can make it and it allows Amy to sleep later on Thur.) THis will give us the week and weekend to sort through the documentation. I am also happy to meet before the weekend, if it works for everyone else. I would like to get started on my section ASAP.
    Thanks, Simonne

  6. That meeting time works for me. I'll get right on those articles. Your ideas on breaking the article down are similar to what I had been thinking. I think that the what, how, why are important to understanding what this compound does. When we meet, I think that we need to take some time just to talk about how it works so that we are all on the same page.

  7. Hi all,

I really liked Simonne's proposal for how to organize the paper. I went through the categories she created (hope that's ok, I like detail) and I have a proposal on how to organize the sections Simonne suggested more specifically:

    1. First section: (~ 4 pages-2 students)
    A. Background including significance of research (how it relates to metabolic disorders and obesity disorders) and noting the importance of resveratrol to signify that it stemmed the research to enhance the activity of sirt1.

    B. Transition to how resveratrol activates SIRT1 followed by activity of SIRT1 alone.

2.Second section (~6 pages -3 students) from the research on SRT1720.
    A. Discuss the metabolic effects of SRT1720 and it’s “multifaceted pathway”

    B. Discussing each SRT1720 experiment in detail

C Discuss the implications with respect to the activity of sirt1 from the first 4 pages.

I was thinking that each person could pick one section (of course we can modify or ask for help if one section is overwhelming.) Let me know if this outline makes sense of if you have any suggestions.

Also, I think that if a few of us could go and talk to Dr. T about the paper to gain more insight on the outline of the paper and discuss the research we have done so far, that would be really helpful. I am more than happy to go but I would like company:).

I am happy to meet this Thursday (9:30ish?) before the weekend even to just briefly get organized and sign up for different sections.
I can definitely make Tuesday at 9:15!

    Thanks,

    Margaret

  8. I can meet on Thursday, I don't mind the early time! I think your outline looks good Margaret. We should assign sections the next time we meet, so the people who wanna get cracking can!

  9. Ladies,

Am I following the same strategy as last time to fill out this current evaluation due Thursday? What do you think?

  10. I am planning on it. Although I did get reprimanded for not giving a variety of scores in the "descriptor" section even though I did give everyone a two in at least one category. I may just have to throw in some 3s and 2s while keeping everyone's score as similar as possible.

  11. I am on board. Last evaluation I received an UNACCEPTABLE!!!!. Strangely, I could almost here him say it, as I read it. Is that considered a day-mare?

  12. haha...yeah, maybe my idea wasn't as good as I thought. He says to have a strategy, but I don't think that's possible. Let's just be fair and grade how we think! ps: thank god that exam is over!

  13. I say that we still go with the plan in terms of evaluations, offering a bit of "variety" in the descriptor section and keeping the scores as close as possible.

Is everyone available to meet after break to review the paper? Does Tuesday or Thursday morning before class work for everyone?

  14. Hi everyone,

I hope you all are having a good break and did well on the exam (I don't know about anyone else, but I did what Tyzbir said not to do--panic). I hope everyones portion of the paper is going well as well.

Amy--I am planning on writing my part on Thursday, I was wondering if you had begun to think about what paper you will discuss and what not. Let me know what you are thinking. You can email me directly at cacollin@uvm.edu if you would like to use that media instead of the blog.

    Best, Courtney

p.s. I can anytime meet before class, just let me know.

  15. hey courtney...i'm actually in the library right now about to crack down and chose a paper! if you have already chosen one, will you let me know so that we don't end up doing the same one! that would be horrible. i can meet whenever before class too

  16. courtney,
i have decided to do my review on the article titled: "specific SIRT1 activation mimics low energy levels and protects against diet-induced metabolic disorders by enhancing fat oxidation." this article came from the "cell metabolism." hope it's not the same one you chose!

  17. Amy,

I'll do the other paper. As it turns out I'll have to do it tomorrow anyway, so its all set! good luck on the paper.
